Ellicott City
The Ellicott City installment of the Images of America series was released on June 21, 2006.
Ellicott City enjoys a rich and varied history, from its origin as the tiny trade center of Ellicott's Mills to the present seat of rapidly urbanizing Howard County. Three Quaker brothers, John, Andrew and Joseph Ellicott, of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, chose this picturesque wilderness to establish a flour mill in 1772, four years before the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Ellicott's Iron Works - An early 19th century drawing by Champagne known officially
as the "Patapsco Rolling and Slitting Mills and Nail Manufactory of Ellicott & Co." The factory was
located on the Patapsco River, downstream from the mills at Oella and just upstream of the present
day Ellicott City bridge. The site was later occupied by the Granite Manufactory, a cotton mill, and
was eventually destroyed by the great flood of July 1868.
Norton Pharmacy - Dr. Edward and John J. Norton stand on the right, outside their
pharmacy in Ellicott City. Norton's printed many postcards of local images for sale in their pharmacy.
The hand-colored vintage postcards are still sought by collectors today.
