Ellicott City

The Ellicott City installment of the Images of America series was released on June 21, 2006.

Ellicott City enjoys a rich and varied history, from its origin as the tiny trade center of Ellicott's Mills to the present seat of rapidly urbanizing Howard County. Three Quaker brothers, John, Andrew and Joseph Ellicott, of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, chose this picturesque wilderness to establish a flour mill in 1772, four years before the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Ellicott's Iron Works - An early 19th century drawing by Champagne known officially as the "Patapsco Rolling and Slitting Mills and Nail Manufactory of Ellicott & Co." The factory was located on the Patapsco River, downstream from the mills at Oella and just upstream of the present day Ellicott City bridge. The site was later occupied by the Granite Manufactory, a cotton mill, and was eventually destroyed by the great flood of July 1868.

“It could almost be titled ‘Catonsville Lost’. Not only does it makes us mourn the loss of such magnificent homes and the ‘village’ atmosphere, but a certain lifestyle of the residents of the long-gone era.” -
Lucy W. McKean, President
Catonsville Historical Society

“This is a wonderful book and for anyone who lived in and around Catonsville when they were growing up, it is a treasure. For those of us who did not it certainly adds to our knowledge of this area. Thanks Marsha for such a spectacular research effort. Looking forward to the next book.” -
